E-MAX is a step forward in the evolution of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene for total joint bearing surfaces.
Highly crosslinked A proven strategy for reducing in vivo wear.
Mechanically annealed Eliminates* free radicals without the problems (such as reduced strength) associated with melt-annealing.
Vitamin E blended Provides excellent resistance to oxidation.
E-MAX Design Rationale
Design Requirements
E-MAX was developed to build on the successes of first-generation XLPE, while addressing the trade-offs currently associated with these materials. In general, the goal is a material that fulfills three primary design requirements: wear resistance, oxidative stability, and maintenance of mechanical properties. (Figure 3)
PE Design Requirements. (a) Poor wear resistance and oxidative stability for conventional PE. (b) Improved wear and oxidation but reduced mechanical properties for melt-annealed XLPE. (c) Balanced for E-MAX.
